As one of the most acclaimed tourist areas in the state of Arizona, Downtown Scottsdale provides an eclectic mix of southwestern and contemporary art galleries, specialty retail, upscale dining, active nightlife and cultural attractions for residents and visitors alike. This notoriety was recently reinforced by the New York Times, who ranked Downtown Scottsdale No. 9 in its top 31 Places to Go This Summer. The top billing was based on Scottsdale's luxury hotels, nightlife and summer resort packages. DOWNTOWN SCOTTSDALE BY THE NUMBERS: ** 786 acres ** Free trolley service - 7 days/week, 12 months/year ** Year-round Thursday Art Walk events, 7-9 p.m. ** Signature events including Fashion Week, Savor Scottsdale, and Via Colori ** Free downtown parking ** 2,500 residential units ** 3,300+ hotel rooms in 20+ hotels ** 100+ art galleries ** 50+ lounges, bars and nightclubs ** 85+ restaurants ** More than 50 public artworks ** 30,000+ visitors on any given weekend night, year-round "The West's Most Western Town," Scottsdale is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. In 1951 when the city was officially incorporated it had a population of 2000. Today the population has grown to 240,710 and is now the sixth largest city in all of Arizona. Premier golf along with the incredible views of the Sonoran Dessert, McDowell Mountains and Fountain Foothills make Scottsdale a major upscale tourist destination. Another one of Scottsdale’s perks is its favorable climate with hot summers and mild winters. The city can be broken down into four main areas; South Scottsdale, Old Town Scottsdale, The Shea Corridor and North Scottsdale. South Scottsdale is home to primarily the working class and offers a great nightlife scene. Old Town Scottsdale is the main cultural area with the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall as one of its main features. The Shea Corridor is a popular area with a large number of resorts and communities. North Scottsdale is fast growing area containing some of the most upscale homes in the city.
Scottsdale is home to various higher education institutes. A few of the larger ones include Scottsdale Community College 9000 E Chaparral Rd) and Scottsdale Culinary Institute (8100 E Camelback Rd). If you can’t find what you are looking for, only 15 miles away are a variety of other institutes; Arizona State University-Main Campus, Phoenix College, Gateway Community College and Paradise Valley Community College. The majority of students are served by the Scottsdale Unified School District. A few areas on the outer parts of Scottsdale are served by districts in the Phoenix Metro Area. These districts include the Cave Creek Unified School District, Paradise Valley Unified School District, Phoenix Union High School District, Tempe Union High School District, and the Balsz Elementary School District. Scottsdale’s largest schools include Desert Mountain High School, Horizon High School, Chaparral High School, Cocopah Middle School, Mountainside Middle School and Cheyenne Traditional Elementary School. Aside from public schools there is also a wide variety of private school available. Some of the largest private schools include Judson School (K-12), Thunderbird Adventist Academy (9-12), Our Lady-Perpetual Help School (K-8) and El Dorado Private School (PK-5).
Scottsdale is a golfer’s paradise. It was stated as being “America’s Best Place to Live for Golf,” (2006) by the Robb Report. This doesn’t come to a surprise considering the city has over 200 courses. A few of the well known courses include the Tournament Players Club, Boulders Resort & Golden Spa, Desert Mountain, Grayhawk and Desert Highlands. The Tournament Players Club (TPC) is a beautiful course located in the Sonoran Desert encircled by the amazing McDowell mountains. Aside from the great landscape TPC above all is known for being the home of the FBR annual open golf tournament. This golf event brings in the highest attendance in the world. Boulder Resort & Golden Spa is another hot spot named the second best golf resort in the United States by Travel & Leisure Golf Magazine. Golfing may be popular but it isn’t the only recreation Scottsdale has to offer. Take in Scottsdale’s beautiful surroundings at one of the many parks. La Mirada Desert Park spans overs 9 acres and features a desert botanical nature trail. The park also has a playground, basketball court and playground. Other parks include Mountain View Park with a 12 station fitness trail, Pinnacle Peak Park offering great scenic hiking trail as well as rock climbing for advanced climbers and Stonegate Equestrian Park. Scottsdale is known for its great shopping with over 15 shopping centers. Two of the more upscale centers are Scottsdale Fashion Square which is one of the 20 largest malls in the nation and Kierland Commons. |
